Man City under pressure to 'trim' squad size

Mon 26th Jul 2010 | Club & Country Competitions

Manchester City Football Club are under pressure to sell up to 12 players to adhere to the new rules for this season according to Soccerex daily.

From the start of the 2010/11 season Premier League clubs must register a list of 25 players eligible to play for the season, with eight of them required to be ‘home grown’.

A player will qualify as being home grown if he has been registered with and English or Welsh club for three years prior to his 18th birthday and while City do not have a problem with that, they will need to sell some of their players to fall in-line with the squad number rule.

Players like Stephen Ireland, Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards could find themselves at a new club as Roberto Mancini, the City manager, needs to trim his bloated squad down.

Mancini said: "I know that we must sell some players because we must have a list with 25 players. I am disappointed because some players must change teams now.

“It is difficult for them to play for us. When you play in four competitions you must have a large squad because if not you have difficulties. For this it's important we have 25 players."
