Fans Group to work together on relocation plans
Mon 28th Jun 2010 | Football Sponsorship
Cambridge Fans United (CFU) has committed its organisation to work with Cambridge United’s landlords, Grosvenor Developments, in its bid to find a site and develop a new stadium for the club and, potentially, other sporting and community uses.
CFU signed a Memorandum of Understanding this week, with Grosvenor and the club’s Board, which means that a feasibility study of the options will be undertaken, together with other interested and influential bodies, including Cambridgeshire Horizons, County and District Councils and Cambridgeshire Football Association.
CFU Chairman, Dave Matthew-Jones explained “We will be involved in the process of seeking a new location and the design of a new stadium, because it is important that the views of the fans who will use any new facilities are taken into account. To that end, we have already raised a series of issues which we think will be important – things like the inclusion of facilities for standing, rather than an all-seater stadium; how the new stadium will be paid for and owned; how it will be accessed; what opportunities there will be for the club to develop its commercial potential and so forth.”
“Many fans will be reluctant, sad and disappointed to leave the Abbey Stadium. However, having been beaten to the post in our bid to secure the funds to buy the ground back ourselves, we recognise that a move is probably inevitable now and we will be working hard to ensure that the club and its fans get the best possible facilities on the best possible terms.”
