Aston Villa consider Safe-Standing at Villa Park

Thu 19th Jan 2012 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Aston Villa could become the first Premier League club to introduce safe-standing areas at Villa Park.

The club are understood to be considering the plan to introduce a safe-standing section at the stadium following consultation with fans recently.

In a recent SCG meeting between senior club officials led by chief executive Paul Faulkner, and fans made up of season ticket holders, message board users, single match ticket buyers and Lions Club representatives, it’s understood that there was unanimous support for the idea.

Tony Barnes, secretary of Aston Villa Supporters' Trust, told the Daily Mail: “I'm in favour of it. Technology has moved on. There's turnstile control, closed-circuit television and strict health and safety guidelines now that clubs must adhere to if they are to be granted the appropriate accreditation to stage matches by the local authority.”

SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster recently announced that he would support clubs who wished to re-introduce safe-standing areas in a bid to reverse the decline in attendances and add to the atmosphere at Scottish football stadiums.

UEFA and FIFA require stadiums to be all–seated to host their club and international competitions but Villa hope to follow in the footsteps of German Bundesliga clubs which have safe–standing areas which are easily converted to seating areas.
