Thu 5th Jan 2012 | Football Club Management
Sunderland AFC has announced that Gary Hutchinson has been appointed to the clubs’ Board of Directors, in the role of Commercial Director.
Gary headed up Sunderland’s highly successful venue, events and sales divisions in recent years, leading the team that established the Stadium of Light as one of the country’s major live music venues in just three years.
As the key link with strategic partners in the city, Gary has helped to grow and develop the club’s relationships with primary stakeholders such as the City Council and the University of Sunderland, along with major companies such as Nissan, Gentoo, Nexus and Caterpillar.
As chairman of the North East Chamber of Commerce’s Sunderland committee, he is also a well known and respected figure in the city, providing support to a large number of businesses and organisation across Sunderland.
Gary has also been responsible for setting up 1879 Events Ltd, the club’s external event management company.
His new role will see the 31 year old continue to oversee the club’s sales and events divisions, as well as spearheading business partnerships and strategies with key regional stakeholders.
Outside of matchdays the Stadium of Light is a thriving venue for conferences, dinners and events. In the last three years it has played host to over half a million people in some of the biggest live music events ever staged in the North East.
SAFC Chief Executive Margaret Byrne said: “We are delighted to welcome Gary to the Board of Directors. He is a hugely committed member of our team and his enthusiasm and drive are tremendous assets for our football club.
“His knowledge of the regional business landscape and the effective partnerships he has established with key stakeholders throughout the city and the north east as a whole will be invaluable to us as we look to grow and develop the club on and off the field.”
