Premier League is not expected to introduce multiple shirt sponsors
Thu 13th Jan 2011 | Football Sponsorship
Premier League football clubs have no appetite for boosting revenue by showcasing more than one sponsor's name on their shirts, countering press speculation that a change in the rules was afoot.
According to Marketing Magazine it’s understood that despite suggestions that clubs approached executives at the Premier League about changing the rules to allow multiple sponsors on their match kits, a source has stated such a move is categorically not on the agenda.
It has been stressed that such a move, which would bring the league into line with some European leagues, would require the backing of two thirds of the Premier League's 14 clubs to vote in favour of the rule change.
"The Premier League has not gone down that route and there are no current plans to change things" said the magazine’s source.
The advantage of having just one shirt sponsor is that, unlike multiple sponsors, it is showcased in a clear and uncluttered manner on kits.
Clubs in the lower division of the league are allowed to choose more than one shirt sponsor.
Last year, Premier League club Tottenham was granted permission from the Premier League to have different shirt sponsors for league and cup games – Autonomy, the software company, for the league, and Investec asset management for cup games.
