Cambridge Fans Trust AGM to discuss Community Trust options

Cambridge United supporters will have the opportunity to tell CFU what they think about the possibility of a community trust being formed to run the club in the future, when the fans group holds its AGM, on Monday.
CFU has been invited by the club’s Chairman, Paul Barry, to investigate options for the future, alongside his recent announcement that additional investment is required for it to remain viable in the longer term. As part of that, CFU has been talking to a number of clubs where similar schemes are running and to Supporters Direct, which has had involvement with many clubs and fans groups.
Guests at the meeting will include Kevin Rye, from Supporters Direct, and Kris Stewart, AFC Wimbledon’s former Managing Director. Club directors Renford Sargent and Jez George are also expected to be at the meeting, which will be held in the Supporters Club at 7.30 p.m.
CFU Vice-Chairman, Robert Osbourn, said “Although only CFU members will be able to take part in the formal part of the meeting, we shall be pleased to see any fan who would like to come along to contribute their views on the way forward for the club.”
“We have already had a significant amount of interest from people who want to help and the huge level of offers of commitment which we got, earlier in the year, when there was the prospect of buying the ground back, leads us to believe that the will is there to make something happen.
"Obviously, if the Board does find offers of significant investment from other sources to sustain and develop the club in the future, that would be good, but many clubs are finding that to be a tough call. The fans will, I am sure, not want the club’s progress held back because we didn’t do what was required at the right time.
“The significance of what we are doing is that the football club is a big part of not just the local community and the city, but also the wider area. The challenge is to build partnerships to maintain and develop that for the benefit of everyone.”
