400 clubs to receive share of 2010 FIFA World Cup ™ benefits
FIFA have announce that 400 clubs affiliated from 55 Member Associations around the globe are set to obtain a share of the benefits from the successful staging of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.
On 14 March 2008 the FIFA Executive Committee agreed to set aside provisions of USD 40 million for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and USD 70 million for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil in order to recognise the important part clubs play in the success of the FIFA World Cup. The payments following the 2010 FIFA World Cup were distributed via the Member Associations to the clubs of the 736 players who participated in the final competition.
"We are pleased that we can share the success of the 2010 FIFA World Cup with the clubs by providing them a share of the benefits of our flagship event, in particular to recognise their efforts in the development of young players", said FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.
A club’s share of the USD 40 million was calculated by reference to the number of players from a club who were selected for their representative team for the final competition of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the number of days each player was at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This period started two weeks before the opening match of the final competition, up until the day after his representative team was eliminated.
More specifically, the “total per player” was calculated by multiplying the number of days a player was present at the 2010 FIFA World Cup by “per player per day” amount, which was set at USD 1,600. FIFA would also like to stress that in this process it was not relevant whether the player actually played or not in any given match during the final competition.
Of the “total per player” amount, a pro rata share is then passed on to the club(s) with which a player was registered in the two year period before the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The top five clubs receiving a share of the benefits of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ were:
1. FC Barcelona with a total payment of USD 866,267; 2: FC Bayern München (USD 778,667); 3: Chelsea FC (USD 762,667); 4: Liverpool FC (USD 695,600); 5: Real Madrid CF (USD 678,133).
Furthermore, a number of clubs who are not playing in their national top division will also receive a share in the payments, whilst a number of clubs from Member Associations whose representative team did not participate in the final competition, will also benefit from such payments.
