Man City's groundsman scoops prestigious award

Wed 1st Dec 2010 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

The superb quality of Manchester City Football Club's playing surfaces was recognised when the club won a prestigious the Alex R. Millar Award.

Manchester City’s very own Grounds team scooped the coveted award for The Professional Grounds Management Team of the Year (The Alex R. Millar Award) at the Institute of Groundsmans Awards.

The Institute of Groundsmanship organisation represents the whole of the groundscare industry and the award was in recognition of their consistent high standard of professionalism, as voted by professional football grounds management teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

On being presented the award on behalf of the Grounds team by Geoff Webb, Chief Executive of the Institute of Groundsmanship, Roy Rigby, Grounds Manager for City said:

“We are delighted to win the award for Professional Football Grounds Team of the Year. It’s great to see the team get the recognition they deserve for all their hard work, week in week out ensuring not only the City of Manchester Stadium pitch is in perfect condition, but also the Academy and Training Ground pitches. The fact we were voted the best by our peers in the grounds industry from all over the United Kingdom is a huge honour and something we are extremely proud of.”

The team beat off stiff competition from Arsenal and Nottingham Forrest to clinch the accolade at the gala ceremony held last week at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.
