England 2018 offers 'perfect' profitability prospects
Tue 30th Nov 2010 | Money & Finance
England's 2018 World Cup bid leader Andy Anson has labelled FIFA's profitablity analysis "perfect".
After the controversial week the English team have endured, the news their bid has come out top of a FIFA study assessing the economic value of a World Cup in all bidding countries to the game's world governing body will have sounded better than the final credits of Panorama.
Reports compiled by FIFA consultants McKinsey revealed that after an analysis of a number of sectors, England would meet 100% profitability in every area to host the World Cup in eight years.
Rivals Spain/Portugal received 91%, Belgium and Holland were given 87% and Russia were awarded 86%.
Anson claimed the results are "the perfect foundation" to be awarded the World Cup, and will no doubt be relieved the news comes the morning after Panorama accused three FIFA executive committee members of taking bribes, and alleged FIFA vice-president Jack Warner attempted to supply ticket touts.
Anson will hope that being ranked as the most profitable country will help ease some of the fears that FIFA will have about voting England to host the tournament.
UEFA president Michel Platini insists England's bid has not been affected.
Platini claimed the programme will not any detrimental effect, but said; "What may affect the decision is the atmosphere going back a long time and what people have been writing about FIFA in the British press for many years."
Anson now sees England as underdogs to win the vote, but is remaining optimistic that the England bid can prevail, saying: "We can win it, we can definitely win it. We may be underdogs as we sit here now but we can win it and that's what I'm bothered about."
