The state of the art Youth and Women's Leadership Centre in Santa Cruz has been built as part of the legacy project for the Rio 2010 Homeless World Cup which took place on Copacabana Beach from 19-26 September 2010.
The centre will focus on assisting young people and women within the local community. It will provide education and leadership training and an opportunity to play regular sport, ensuring the benefits of football are available to people in Santa Cruz.
The Legacy Centre was built in partnership with Architecture for Humanity and Nike, teaming up with local partners Organização Civil de Ação Social (OCAS), and Bola Pra Frente (BPF) and designed by Lompreta Nolte Arquitetos, Nanda Eskes Arquitetura and Daniel Feldman.
Mel Young, Founder and President of the Homeless World Cup was delighted that the Homeless World Cup will leave a sustainable legacy in Brazil. He said:
“This legacy project is very important to us as it provides a physical demonstration of what the Homeless World Cup stands for - football being a tool for inclusion and to help homless people change their lives. The Homeless World Cup exists to end homelessness. We hope that this centre in Santa Cruz will energise homeless people and the local community by providing a local base for everyone to enjoy.
Cameron Sinclair, Founder of Architecture for Humanity said: “We are thrilled that the Santa Cruz centre is creating a lasting legacy and providing resources to the community, a home for street-football, and an elevated voice for the Homeless of Brazil.”
