Man Utd global popularity continues to grow
Tue 2nd Nov 2010 | IT & Technology
Manchester United’s global popularity shows no signs of wilting after they celebrating gaing their 4 millionth ‘fan’ on facebook this morning.
The club who were initially slow to embrace the new media platform have proven that they are one of the most popular football clubs in the world by quickly establishing the astonishing following.
Set up just over two months ago the club has already taken over Liverpool’s (3,064,723) crown as England’s most followed club on facebook.
Despite the club’s off the field turmoil with the anti-Glazer sentiment and the Green & Gold campaign continuing, United’s global popularity appears to be in as good a shape as ever.
However, they still have some way to go to catch up with Spanish Giants Real Madrid who have 5,059,719 fans on their facebook page and Barcelona who have 6,030,287. And they are still playing catch up to Turkish outfit Galatasaray FC who have 4,607,163.
The rising popularity of the social media site to engage with football fans has become an integral part of many clubs’ marketing and communications strategy, allowing clubs and fans to communicate in a manner which was not possible before hand.
