FIFA have been presented with an award in recognition of the immense reach and popularity of the FIFA World Cup™.
Recognised by the broadcast media industry, FIFA received the European Sport TV Audience Award at Sportel Monaco, the international sports convention for television and new media.
The prize for South Africa 2010 is based on objective audience data obtained by summing up the best TV audience of each country, across the 40 studied European countries from September 2009 to August 2010.
The TV ratings data was collected by research and audience measurement specialists Eurodata TV Worldwide.
Accepting the prize on behalf of FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, Niclas Ericson, Director of FIFA TV, said: “I would like to thank the hundreds of millions of football fans around the world for their undying passion for the world game.
It is for them that we constantly strive to deliver the best-possible football viewing experience and I therefore dedicate this prize to the football fan.”
2010 marks the first time that the European Sport TV Audience Award has been given.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa was up against the 2010 Winter Olympics, Formula 1, FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League for the award.
