Professional Players’ Federation launches betting integrity projects for players

Fri 3rd Sep 2010 | Football Industry Events

The Professional Players’ Federation will announce four pilot projects to educate players about sports betting integrity issues at the first national conference which takes place on October 4th in London.

The PPF, with its members including the Professional Footballers Association, Rugby Players Association and Professional Cricketers Association, have long stressed the importance of player education on sports betting issues.

The new projects, made possible by funding from sections of the betting industry, will help to play a major part in protecting sporting integrity. This is a long term issue which has again hit the headlines with the allegations surrounding the Pakistan cricket team.

The first PPF National Conference which includes contributions from a host of former professional sportsmen will start with a 90 minute debate on the issues around betting in sport. This session will include speakers from the Gambling Commission and the Remote Gambling Association as well as Matthew Le Tissier.

The remainder of the conference will focus on a number of contentious areas of debate for professional athletes including drugs in sport and improving the governance of sport.

As another major highlight of the event for the first time, the leaders of all the major player associations will take to the stage in a major panel discussion on the state of British sport. Panellists include Gordon Taylor OBE (PFA), Angus Porter (PCA), Damian Hopley (RPA) and Richard Bevan (LMA) all confirmed to take part.

Additional speakers at the conference come from the very top table of professional sport with Paul Merson, Alex Stewart OBE, Sir Trevor Brooking CBE, Brendon Batson MBE and Paul Elliott MBE.
