Scottish premier League (SPL) and its member clubs have signed up leading insurance broking group Bluefin, in a deal which sees the group take on the placing and co-ordination of the league’s core liability and personal accident insurance programme. The deal will offer the league greater management of risk and help safeguard the financial operations of clubs. In a move to support significant business growth, Bluefin brings its specialist sports expertise to Scotland, with the launch of a dedicated Scottish sports insurance division.
Bluefin, which incorporates the former SBJ Sports division, is one of the leading brokers for the world of sport including football, rugby, cricket and horseracing.
Neil Doncaster, chief executive officer of the SPL, said: “SBJ Sports enjoyed an excellent reputation in our industry and we’re pleased to see that expertise now embedded in the Bluefin Group. The placing of our insurance programme is an important part of our work and we’ve been impressed by Bluefin’s understanding of our issues and their knowledge of the available markets and solutions.”
Bluefin’s Scottish sports insurance division, located in Glasgow, will be headed by Ray Brown, who joins from AVIVA.
Colin Preston, Bluefin Scotland’s managing director commented: “Our appointment by the SPL is a reflection of the increasing importance of managing risks across the league and a greater focus on securing value for member clubs. It’s a complex piece of work, which will benefit from the experience of our well-established team to get the best possible deal available.“
“We are firmly committed to providing SPL and their members with a superior service. The appointment of Ray Brown to spearhead our drive into the sports sector in Scotland is a clear signal of our commitment to delivering cutting-edge advice and innovative insurance solutions to both SPL and the wider Scottish sporting communities.”
