ECA Roundtable with Members of the European Parliament

The European Clubs Association (ECA) today (3rd Feb) held a roundtable with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in Brussels. The aim of the meeting was to present ECA and engage with MEPs on key issues of interest.
With the recent adoption of the Lisbon Treaty granting powers to the EU in the area of Sport, it is important for the clubs who are involved in the day-to-day activities of sport to engage with EU regulators and assist these in shaping sports policy for the coming years.
The discussions were informal allowing for an open and frank discussion. Subjects that were addressed included specificity, autonomy, governance, youth development, financial stability, 6+5, home-grown players and agents.
ECA was represented by Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and General Secretary Michele Centenaro. A number of prominent MEPs including Ivo Belet, Pal Schmitt and Doris Pack attended the roundtable.
Commenting on the roundtable Karl-Heinz Rummenigge stated: “The roundtable we held today was an extremely worthwhile exercise. It allowed for ECA to develop and strengthen relationships with politicians who will be key in developing the EU’s sport policy and to have an open and frank discussion on the numerous issues that football is faced with. I welcome the European Parliament’s openness in listening to ECA and look forward to continued discussions with MEPs in the coming years.”
The present MEPs’ showed great interest and are supportive of ECA’s role and its views on the topics discussed. They urged ECA to join the structured dialogue with all stakeholders in sports at European level.
Ivo Belet who is the author of the European Parliament’s 2007 report on the future of football said: “The exchange of views today with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is a perfect example of how we want to work in the future: collaborate in order to find concrete solutions for a sports sector that is so important for so many people in our society.”
Over the last few months ECA has met with officials and politicians both at national and EU level as it aims to contribute and assist in the continued development of sport throughout Europe. ECA will continue to hold further such discussions over the coming months.
