West Brom offer £5000 per point incentive to players
Tue 6th Jul 2010 | Money & Finance
Newly promoted West Bromwich Albion are reported to be prepared to give the go-ahead to a £5,000-a-point players bonus reward next season – providing they keep the club in the Premier League according to the Express & Star.
It’s understood that the final details of the players’ bonus scheme are still being negotiated, but looks set to see the Baggies agree to the biggest incentive package in the club’s history.
However, the potential to earn a six-figure bonus comes on the condition that Albion win their fight for survival next season.
The club are hoping the bonus scheme sweetens the deal for players as they tackle cut-throat competition recruiting for the new campaign.
Sporting and Technical Director Dan Ashworth is handling negotiations with a small committee of senior players, which are on-going but understood to be close to agreement.
For the first time this season, the Premier League is demanding clubs conduct their campaigns with a 25-man squad to be declared before the summer transfer window shuts down on August 31.
The Albion scheme is a flat, across-the-board deal which would see each of that squad eligible for the bonus.
If the players were to reach safety with a 40 point total, they could each collect £200,000 at a total cost of £5million to the club.
But Albion are putting no limit on the five-grand-a-point scheme and if the team were to enjoy the kind of campaign which saw newly-promoted neighbours Birmingham finish ninth with 50 points last season, the Baggies would still pay out.
That record would have earned the players £250,000 each under the scheme, now being discussed at a cost of £6.25million to the club.
