Yahoo! scores rights to Premier League highlights

Thu 29th Apr 2010 | Television & Broadcasting

Yahoo! has scored an exclusive deal with the Premier League to feature online highlights of football matches over the next three seasons, until 2013.

The deal will see the internet giant screen five-minute highlight packages following every match onYahoo.co.uk, and the company also holds the rights to syndicate this content to other parties.

By securing the coveted internet rights to Premier League matches, Yahoo! has achieved a sought-after position at the centre of the online football world in the UK, and will also allow the company to put together targeted advertising packages when distributing their content to major brands.

European Managing Director for Yahoo!, Rich Riley, said: "The acquisition of Premier League rights shows how serious Yahoo! is about providing the best in video content for our both our users and advertisers.

"Sport is a passion for our target audiences and the Premier League rights are a key part of our efforts to build on Yahoo!'s reputation for engaging, original content."

Brand Republic reports that Yahoo!'s arrangement will succeed the similar three-year deal between the Premier League and Virgin Media, which in turn followed a three-year deal with BSkyB from 2004 to 2007. By obtaining these desired exclusive rights, Yahoo! is in a prime position to boost its online presence further and capitalise on its recent profitability.

Premier League chief executive, Richard Scudamore, commented: "The way fans access Barclays Premier League action is growing ever more diverse and sophisticated. The online highlights package is an important medium for supporters of all our clubs to be able to follow match action.

"Yahoo! has a great reputation and presence in new media and we are pleased to welcome them as a Premier League rights holder. I am sure they will do a fantastic job in reaching the widest possible online audience over the next three seasons."
