Sports CRM Summit 2012

Exclusive session on the founding of the Barclays Premier League

Mon 12th Apr 2010 | Football Industry Events

David Dein, former Vice-Chairman of Arsenal & The FA, will provide an insight on the formation, development and global appeal of Europe’s most high-profile league at the inaugural Soccerex Asian Forum (28-29 July, Singapore).  David is one of a handful of architects responsible for the inception of what is now widely regarded as the most successful and lucrative league in the world.

Since 1992, England’s top tier has incorporated a total of 43 competing clubs; of these Manchester United currently holds the record for title wins with 11. However, the league’s off-the-pitch achievements have led the way in the continued commercialisation of football and have attracted widespread admiration and criticism.

David Dein will invite a selection of special guests who will investigate and discuss several important factors which have contributed to the league’s commercial growth, including:

  • Sponsorship – Barclays’ recent title sponsorship renewal cost £65.8million
  • Broadcasting – from its domestic deal worth an estimated £1.7billion to its overseas revenues which will earn £1billion over the next three years.
  • Global Appeal – over 211 countries will tune into live Premier League coverage from next season, further boosting its popularity in other continents such as Asia.

With proposed initiatives such at the ‘39th Game’ attracting so much controversy this session will also explore the fine balance that needs to be struck between protecting the domestic product while maintaining an international growth strategy.

The Soccerex Asian Forum (28-29 July, Singapore) will take place in the biggest football market in the world and will enable an exchange of ideas between the west and the east and allow partnerships to be forged between European and Asian football rights holders and businesses.
