Dundee Fans’ Community Vision Revealed

Thu 4th Aug 2011 | Clubs Ownership

Dundee Football Club Supporters’ Society have launched their vision of a Community Football Club, following a recent period of consultation with members.

“It’s been a long, hard road to get here, and to go from the process of forming the Society back in 2003 to the fans owning a majority shareholding today is a truly remarkable story,” said Society secretary Fraser MacDonald.

“On behalf of the Society Board, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank each and every Dundee fan for the support and encouragement you have provided throughout that time,”

“Today, we publish the outcome of a consultation period which saw a lot of fans give us their feedback, and our ‘Vision of Dundee FC as a Community Football Club’ is a manifesto based on what the club’s supporters wants their club to be.”

Highlights include:

• Objectives for the club as a social enterprise, bringing the club, the community and its people closer together than ever before.

• Ensuring that the club’s existence, the livelihoods of employees, and the dreams of thousands are never again compromised.

• Making the club more family-friendly and reducing the financial burden to attract more supporters, particularly women and children.

• Reaching out to businesses and to the city’s multicultural community.

• How volunteer services will be a vital part of how the club is run.

• Improving communication with fans, whether living locally or further afield.

• Greater focus on youth and community programmes that could help give youngsters a healthy outlet as well as enabling the club to spot and develop potential talent at an early age.

• A unique opportunity to act as a force for good in their local community, promoting civic responsibility and healthier lifestyles.

Jacqui Robertson, the Society’s community director explained more at the launch. "The value of bringing the club and the people within our community closer together cannot be understated.

“This will be done in many ways, we are for example working hard to provide a platform for many health related initiatives throughout the new season.

“Last season we highlighted the importance of healthy hearts and organ donation with the help of Brian Ferme's daughter Liz, and Ronnie McIntosh, those people are ordinary supporters like me and you. Nothing gets the message across better than from people within our own community, people who sit in the stands at Dens Park on a Saturday.

"Feedback from the fans, can and will help us to move forward, but don’t forget that action from volunteers is invaluable. If you have ideas we want to know about them, however if you can lend a hand even better.

“There are an awful lot of ideas out there, the more of us willing to get involved, the more ideas we can turn into a reality, they will add value to our matchday experience, bring club and community closer together, and help us all help each other – it’s a win/win situation really."
