Mon 4th Apr 2011 | FIFA
FIFA have confirmed that Mohamed Bin Hammam will stand against Sepp Blatter as President of football’s world governing body.
In a statement released today. FIFA confirmed they had received two candidate applications for the up coming presidential elections.
“The FIFA general secretariat received two candidatures for the FIFA Presidency by the statutory deadline (1 April 2011, midnight CET) in accordance with art. 24 par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes.
The names of the candidates are:
• Joseph S. BLATTER (Switzerland)
• Mohamed BIN HAMMAM (Qatar)
“The election for the FIFA Presidency will be held in Zurich on 1 June 2011 within the framework of the 61st FIFA Congress.”
Blatter is looking to secure a fourth term in office having held the seat since 1998. Last month, Blatter stated he would step down as president of FIFA in 2015 if he was re-elected.
Bin Hammam has based his challenge to become FIFA president in a bid to make the organization more transparent. Following the controversy surrounding the bidding process of the 2018/2022 World Cups, Bin Hammam has promised to change the voting system to make it more open and fair.
