Wrexham Chairman Stands Down

Tue 22nd Feb 2011 | Football Club Management

Wrexham Football Club chairman Rob Bickerton, stood down yesterday after potential buyers of the club pulled out.

In a statement from the club yesterday it emerged that Bickerton had taken the decision to stand down after he and potential buyers Jon Harris and Tony Allan decided to withdraw their offer to acquire Wrexham FC.

Their trio’s decision to pull out of the deal is said to have come after fans of Wrexham showed they did not want them to take over the club.

“Following Saturday' display of passion and emotion by the Club's fans, Rob Bickerton, Jon Harris and Tony Allan have decided to withdraw their offer to acquire Wrexham FC, despite the fact that their bid was not linked to Stephen Vaughan,” read a statement on the club’s website.

“They appreciate that the fans are very worried about the Club's future and leadership.

“With this in mind Rob Bickerton has stood down as chairman with immediate effect.”

There had been suggestion that former Chester City owner Stephen Vaughan might be among potential Wrexham investors.

It’s now understood that Wrexham Supporters' Trust have held "productive" talks with Wrexham Town Council about the future ownership of the club..

Current owner Geoff Moss and former chairman Ian Roberts who both stepped down from the board in January had been urged to speak to the Council as well to secure the future of the club.

"Our fear is that it could go into administration again and fold. We have to find a way to secure the future of Wrexham FC and the Racecourse [ground]," Mr Jones said.

Mr Jones said the supporters' trust were hoping to organise a public meeting in the town on 14 March to put forward ideas and consult people about how the club could be developed with more community involvement.
