Manchester United most followed football club on Facebook

Real Madrid and Barcelona may be top of the tree when it comes to revenue generation, but in terms of Facebook followers Manchester United are no.1.
Having arrived late on the social media platform which boasts over 500 million active worldwide users, Manchester United have now become the most followed football club with 9,050,153 million fans.
Barcelona had been no.1 but now sit behind United with 9,049,223million followers.
The figures demonstrate the mass global appeal of Manchester United and the speed at which they acquired such a large following will surely be welcomed by the clubs owners after a turbulent year.
The use of social media platforms by football clubs has become increasingly important with many clubs using it as an extension to their retail outlets. Barcelona’s e-catalogue enables fans to purchase club merchandise via the site as well as tickets for games at the Nou Camp.
But whilst United get to grips with the platform, they have been slow to take the initiative to monetise the platform. A number of United’s Premier League rivals already operate shops from their Facebook accounts which give fans the opportunity to purchase official merchandise like Barcelona.
With more than 50% of social media users logging in every day, experts believe that sites such as Facebook will become an increasingly important revenue stream for football clubs.
So as Manchester United look to over take the Spanish giants in football’s rich list, they may well consider utalising the spending power of their Facebook followers.
