Belper Town FC Chairman steps down after 23 years

Tue 25th Jan 2011 | Clubs Ownership

Belper Town Football Club Chairman, Phil Varney has announced that he is to step down from the role at the end of the season after 23 years in charge.

Phil, who took up the post in March 1988 after the death of former Chairman, John Greenham, has overseen the development and overhaul of the club since its days in the Northern Counties East League.

In particular, he can look back with pride on the major improvements that have been made to its Christchurch Meadow ground under his stewardship, including the modern dressing rooms and conference suite and also the erection of the impressive 500-seat main stand.

Indeed, the ground is now regarded as one of the best in the League and has been recognised by Derby County, who play their home reserve team matches at the stadium.

But Phil now feels that the time is right to hand over the reins to someone who will be able to devote more time to the running of the club.

“I’ve given this decision a lot of consideration in recent months. Whilst I’ve been pleased with the continued stadium improvements, I feel that we have not matched this with progress on the field by securing promotion though the non-league system.

“We should certainly be competing at a much higher level than that in which we are currently placed and I feel that this would be possible through the appointment of a chairman with the necessary skills, time and passion to drive the club forward.

“The main focus for the future has to be in securing promotion and the new chairman will have to work closely with the management team to make this reality.

“I still intend to retain an active role in the club and I will remain as a director. I will also continue in my groundsman’s role, which I know will be appreciated by everyone at the club,” added Varney.

The Club has not yet decided on a successor but hopes to make an appointment over the next month or so.
