Geoff Thomas foundation official Charity partners of Soccerex European Forum

Wed 19th Jan 2011 | Football Industry Events

Soccerex are delighted to announce the Geoff Thomas Foundation as this year’s Charity Partner for the Soccerex European Forum 2011, 30-31 March 2011, Manchester. The Geoff Thomas Foundation focuses on finding new life-saving treatments for blood cancer patients in the UK, faster.

Geoff Thomas, the man behind the Foundation, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia in 2003, shortly after retiring from football. After enjoying a successful career, captaining Crystal Palace to the final of the FA Cup and winning nine caps for England, Geoff found himself fighting this horrendous disease.

He was lucky - his life was saved by a stem cell transplant from his sister.  Geoff was inspired by the bravery of patients around him, many who did not survive, and is determined that the latest treatments should be available to all blood cancer patients as soon as possible.

The Foundation is now working with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research to set up a brand new structure for Clinical Trial centres across the UK. These centres will make these innovative trials more accessible and aim to find new treatments for blood cancer patients.

Speaking on the partnership David Wright, Marketing Director at Soccerex said that “We are delighted to be able to help such a worthy charity. Geoff’s struggle is both harrowing and inspiring, and the work the charity does is invaluable. Hopefully we can help to raise awareness for them within the football industry.”

The Soccerex European Forum is a two-day event which is returning to Manchester for a second year at the Manchester Central and will see the elite of Europe’s football industry come together to debate, network and do business.

The agenda announced so far includes topics such as the German football model, financial equality, commercial challenges to differing sized clubs, successful sponsorship, digital media and fan interaction and Eastern Europe’s upcoming tournaments and market development.

For further information about this event please call +44 (0)208742 7100 or visit www.soccerex.com/europe.
