SPL to press ahead with 10 team league

Scottish Premier League clubs have reached a "broad agreement" on proposals to create a new two-tier structure STV reports. Under new plans, a 10 team SPL1, or Premiership as it has been dubbed, will be formed, with a 12-team SPL2, or Championship, forming the new second senior level in Scottish football.
A formal vote on the new plans is expected in two months time, following a consultation with the Scottish Football Association and the Scottish Football League.
A number of clubs had outlined their opposition to a reduction in the number of teams in the top flight from 12 to 10 prior to Monday's meeting, after previous talks first raised the possibility of a smaller division.
The decision to have two more teams in SPL2 is said to be financial, with the differences between the two tiers bridged through the additional number of games the second tier would bring.
The SPL's chairman, Ralph Topping, said at a press conference on Monday afternoon that other proposals had been put forward and had been rejected, although he did not go into detail on what those plans were.
"The Scottish Premier League (SPL) clubs today reaffirmed their commitment to the work of the Strategic Review Group to develop a structure for the whole of Scottish football," a statement from the SPL read.
"Broad support was given to progressing a 10-team Premiership and a 12-team Championship at the top of a pyramid for Scottish football as the preferred option.
"The SPL clubs have asked the executive team to further develop aspects of these proposals and to update the Strategic Review Group's report.
"The SPL will now consult with the Scottish FA and the Scottish Football League and its clubs before a final decision by the SPL clubs."
Supporters are widely against any proposals to reduce the number of teams competing in the SPL, with the general viewpoint being that playing the same teams four times a season is not appealing, would not raise competitiveness and would not encourage fans to attend games.
