Cameron attacks FIFA and the 'murky' football world

Prime Minister David Cameron has launched a scathing attack on the way world football is governed by FIFA after the failed England 2018 World Cup bid.
Cameron described the running of the game as ‘murky and claimed he was personally misled by some FIFA executives during the bid process.
The Prime Minister said that he was given assurances by certain members of FIFA’s Executive Committee that England had their vote but England were granted only two votes in the process – with Russia awarded the 2018 tournament.
Said Cameron: ‘We had a great bid - technically I think by far the best bid and I think the presentation we made was compelling.’
‘I definitely had a number of those FIFA executives who looked me in the eye and shook my hand and said 'don't worry, we're with you'.’
‘I'm afraid that the world of football governance is rather murky in that way,’ he added.
FIFA have been attacked for the reluctance to take action to tackle corruption within the organization. This has lead to a leading German lawyer resigning from FIFA's ethics commission in protest.
Günter Hirsch wrote in a letter to the ethics commission's president, Claudio Sulser, that FIFA appeared unwilling to deal with growing problems.
According to the Guardian the 67-year-old former president of Germany's highest appeals court said FIFA showed "no real interest" in trying to clean up the organisation.
"The events of the past few weeks have raised and strengthened the impression that responsible persons in FIFA have no real interest in playing an active role in resolving, punishing and avoiding violations against ethic regulations of FIFA," Hirsch wrote in the letter, according to the German DPA news agency.
