The FA launch grassroots coaching initiative

Fri 10th Dec 2010 | Football Governance

Yesterday saw the launch of the Football Association’s ‘The Future Game - Grassroots’ initiative at Wembley Stadium. Attended by Fabio Capello, Sir Trevor Brooking, Sam Allardyce and over 600 coaches from around the country, the FA hopes to encourage a new way of coaching England’s young players.

Acting as a guide for coaches working with young players in the grass roots game, The Future Game - Grassroots manual is hope to encourage coaches to develop an experience for their players which captures their imagination and ignites their enthusiasm for the game.

Launching the manual, Trevor Brooking, Director of Football Development, stressed: "We have to play through thirds [defence, midfield, attack], we need 10 technically proficient outfield players who are all comfortable in possession.

“It is the way I was brought up at West Ham,” he added.

“You need intelligent young players who can make decisions without looking to the bench all the time. To create decent young players we need coaches who can engage children in the game and make them fall in love with football."

Also speaking at the launch, Sam Allardyce, the Blackburn Rovers manager said;

“I am delighted to have assisted The FA with the launch of The Future Game, Grassroots Guide to Coaching.

“It was fantastic to see so many coaches from all levels of the game here today all wanting to learn, develop and widen their knowledge base. Significant investment in our young coaches and managers is vital for the future development of the game.

“The opening of St George’s Park National Football Centre in particular, will be the essential element in the plan to increase both the quantity and quality of coaches in years to come.”
