First cohort of students start the new Coventry sports law programme in London

A new post-graduate programme in sports law has seen its first intake of students.
With sport continuing to face a growing number of challenges, including growing commercialisation, a series of constitutional issues and the representation of athletes and players, the legal environment in which sport operates has never been more exciting or demanding.
Set up by leading sports lawyer Mel Stein (and formerly hosted at Kings College, London) the course tutors are leading sports and industry figures, each with a specialist knowledge and practical experience in the field. Some of the tutors running the course are also stand-alone agents.
The course consists of three modules; constitutional law, commercialisation and issues for athletes/players.
Coventry University’s Dr Anna Semens is responsible for developing the new programme.
She said:
“We are excited to be associated with such an exciting programme and firmly believe that there is a need for this Postgraduate course. We have already recruited some highly motivated students who will be the first to achieve this qualification from Coventry University. The programmes go beyond academic learning and provide practical insight from experts of international standing.”
It is a specialist programme designed for those individuals wanting to establish or advance their career in sports law and administration.
Professor Simon Chadwick, Director of the Centre for the International Business of Sport (CIBS) at Coventry University, said:
“Given the growing number of legal pressures that sport faces, we feel our new programme will make a significant contribution to the overall development of sport law.”
