FA puts off equality push amid sex scandal

Thu 11th Feb 2010 | Marketing & PR

The FA and Kick It Out, which promotes equality and diversity in football, have postponed a campaign to tackle homophobia in the sport. The decision comes amid scandal involving members of the England team.

The work, created by Ogilvy, was due to be launched at Wembley Stadium tomorrow (Thursday). Leading figures from the football world and prominent members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community were scheduled to speak at it.

The activity focuses on challenging football supporters who direct homophobic insults at players. It seeks to draw a parallel between this kind of behaviour and racial abuse, which has been Kick it Out's main focus since its campaign began in 1993.

The activity includes a hard-hitting viral ad which football clubs had agreed to show within their grounds and feature on their websites.

A spokesman for the FA denied the delay was related to recent sex scandal. ‘We've had to postpone the event to give us more time to work on a long-term strategy,' he said.
