SPL meet to discuss league expansion

Wed 20th Oct 2010 | Club & Country Competitions

The Scottish Premier League (SPL) is to meet today to discuss plans to revitalise club football in Scotland according to BBC Scotland.

It’s understood that representatives from the leagues 12 clubs are gathering at Hampden Park, with league reconstruction top of the agenda.

Scotland’s top flight is in desperate need of rejuvenation and talks have been ongoing for weeks between concerned chairman, Top of the agenda is expected to be the expansion of the SPL from the current 12 teams to 14, which is supported by the majority of the clubs.

The meeting will discuss ways to rejuvenate the league which has seen attendances fall sharply and become increasingly uncompetitive. Options considered include a relegation play-off with two-up and two-down system as well as increasing the league to 24 teams.

However, some see feel that expanding the league to 24 teams would dilute the appeal to media broadcasters and reduce revenues whilst others are fearful of losing out on vital income generated by playing the Old Firm clubs at home twice a season.

No decision is expected today but any agreement will be hoped to be implemented in time for next season (2010/11)
