Northampton Town FC receive backing for ground re-development proposals

Fri 10th Sep 2010 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Northampton Town Football Club Chairman David Cardoza has warmly welcomed comments from the Leader of the Opposition on Northampton Borough Council, David Palethorpe (Conservative) backing the plans of both the Cobblers and the Saints to re-develop their grounds with the use of out of town retail.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, Cllr Palethorpe said, "The Liberal Democrats seem to think the town's economy ends at Abington Street.

"Our position on this has always been clear, the Conservatives would scrap the 'town centre first' policy.

"We fully support the expansion and prosperity of Northampton's sporting clubs, and we do not object to out-of-town retail development."

Mr Cardoza said, "I am delighted and re-assured to hear those comments. I am sure the re-development plans for both ourselves and the Saints will be a big issue in the build up to the elections next May and I am sure our supporters and those who also support the Saints will be pleased to learn of the Conservative party's stance.

"We have never said we want to do anything to affect the town centre, we just want the Lib Dems to understand the value to the town, the local community, and the local economy of a successful local football club and a successful local rugby club.

"Their town centre only policy lacks common sense and is not serving the people of the town. I am happy to read those comments from Cllr Palethorpe and am sure the many thousands of people in the town who support our sporting clubs and their work for the community will be too."
