SA locked in row over use of 'Bafana Bafana' nickname

FIFA World Cup 2010 hosts, South Africa, are embroiled in a copyright row over their ‘Bafana Bafana’ nickname.
The South African Football Association (SAFA), who made a reported $10m profit from the name during this summer’s tournament, are involved in a dispute with a local businessman who acquired the rights to the name in 1994.
''I want to avoid saying we are very angry about it,'' South African Football Association president Kirsten Nematandani. ''We are worried about it. We are concerned.''
The future of the nickname is now being discussed at a ‘national level’ according to Nematandani, with SAFA first beginning the extended legal battle in 1997 to claim the rights over Bafana Bafana.
South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed in 2002 a SAFA motion that it had rights over Bafana Bafana and although there is no indication from the current owners that they will sue SAFA from using the term, the country’s football association is unable to market it.
