Blackpool's return to the top flight delayed

Tue 13th Jul 2010 | Football Stadiums & Facilities

Blackpool Football Club has had to delay its home return to the top-flight by two weeks after they announced that the improvements to its Bloomfield Road ground would not be ready in time for the opening round of the Premier League.

The North West club said they could not give the Premier League a 100 per cent guarantee that work on the east stand would be finished by Saturday August 14. Improvements to Blackpool’s stadium are ongoing with a new stand being erected to increase its current capacity of around 12,000 - the smallest in the Premier League – to 17,600.

This has led to the Premeir League agreeing to switch the club’s opening day fixture against Wigan Athletic to an away game and its first Premier League home fixture will now be against Fulham on August 28.

A statement on the club’s website read: "Following ongoing discussions with the Premier League in respect of the agreed improvements to both Bloomfield Road and its facilities it has been decided, by all parties, to reverse the club's opening-day fixture".
