IFA president to resign

Tue 6th Jul 2010 | Football Governance

Irish Football Association (IFA) are expecting to confirm the resignations of President Raymond Kennedy and his deputy David Martin.

A unanimous vote by their own executive board of directors came after an inquiry criticised their roles in the 2008 sacking of Howard Wells as chief executive, finding the two equally to blame for costing the IFA £516,000 in having to settle Wells' wrongful dismissal claim.

The Northern Irish government were reported to have threatened to withdrawn the £30 million funding needed to assist developing Windsor Park into a new national stadium if Kennedy and Martin had remained in office

Kennedy, who has been in South Africa as a member of FIFA's World Cup disciplinary committee, leaves after serving three years as president. “In my opinion the IFA has come a long way and made positive strides forward. I am proud of that and also proud of the role the IFA has played in the stadium issue.

I have been involved in a lot of positive developments at the IFA, including changes brought about in the governance of the organisation,” he said.
