Nationwide to end its 11 year sponsorship of the England team.

Mon 5th Jul 2010 | Football Sponsorship

It has been widely reported that building society Nationwide look set to end its 11-year sponsorship of the England football team, following the team’s dismal performance in the World Cup.

A Nationwide spokeswoman said: 'Nationwide's sponsorship of the England team has been extremely successful over 11 seasons and has significantly raised the profile of our organisation. Our current sponsorship deal ends at the end of July and it is unlikely to be renewed.'

Nationwide replaced Green Flag as team sponsor in 1999 and is not looking to renew its current deal that runs out next month.

The News however will leave The Football Association with an uphill task as it looks to fill the £20m void left by Nationwide.

The FA has managed to secure a one-year extension with FA Cup sponsor E.ON recently but the search is now on to secure a new sponsor.

The FA have had more than their fair share of troubles over the last six months with CEO Ian Watmore’s resignation and the Lord Triesman’s bribery scandal this latest set back is the last thing they need after a very poor World Cup.
