Sponsors withdraw support of French national team
Tue 22nd Jun 2010 | Football Sponsorship
Just when the France Football Federation thought things couldn’t get any worse following its national team’s chaotic World Cup campaign, a number of sponsors have withdrawn their support.
In response to the ensuing bad publicity, Credit Agricole bank suspended a television advertising campaign on insurance products that featured the team according to Soccerex daily.
Partner of the French Football Federation until 2014, the energy company GDF Suez has said that it will discuss its relationship with the organisation once the World Cup is over.
Fast-food chain Quick stopped its TV ad with Anelka and will soon have removed all advertising in its restaurants and posters on Paris streets that feature the player.
On the other hand, sports apparel brand adidas, which will give way to Nike as supplier of the French team from 2011 onwards, will continue to activate its partnership.
Media reports over the last 24 hours suggest that some French players may boycott today’s final group stage match against South Africa as a further protest against Anelka’s expulsion.
