Analysts issue warning over club spending on player wages

Tue 8th Jun 2010 | Money & Finance

In light of the Portsmouth fiasco this season, Deloitte have released a stark warning to clubs over spending on wages in the coming seasons.

According to the report, spending on players wages in the Premier League increased by £132m (11%) to over £1.3bn for 2008/9. This equates to a record high wages/revenue ratio of 67%.

Overall revenues of the top 92 league clubs exceeded £2.5bn for the first time in 2008/09, an increase of almost £100m. However, the challenging economic environment restricted Premier League growth to 3% whilst the Championship increased revenues by 12%

The document produced by Deloitte’s Sport Business Group also highlights the net debt of Premier League clubs’ increased to £3.3bn in the same period (£3.2m 2007/08) with almost two-thirds of the total debt related to Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
