Liverpool arrive in Qatar for UN partnership

Tue 10th Jan 2012 | Marketing & PR

Liverpool Football Club have arrived in Qatar to begin a partnership with the United Nations aimed at helping children from war-torn and impoverished countries.

The UN has invited along 30 young adults from grassroots sporting projects in Africa and Palestine to work with coaches from the LFC Foundation and other sporting organisations.

Speaking from the camp, LFC Foundation coach Forbes Duff said: "We've got a long history of successful community projects back in England and around the world and we're aiming to pass on the knowledge and best practice we've acquired over the years to these young people so they can return home and become leaders in their own community.

"Although this is a pilot project at this stage, and it's the first of its kind, we're hoping to build strong links with the UN and give many more people the same opportunity we're giving these initial 30."

Liverpool were approached by the UN in November to be the Premier League's representative in this project due to its global appeal. It is hoped this will be the first of many youth leadership camps - and there is already a plan to bring five of the 30 young people to Merseyside in the near future.

LFC Foundation director Gary Adlen added: "It's not just about playing a bit of football and coaching them - it's about teaching them life skills for the future.

"We want to go with these kids through the journey they're going to take for the rest of their lives."

The so-called youth leadership camp has been organised by the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace (UNOSDP) in collaboration with Right to Play and the Aspire Academy for Sport Excellence.

The Premier League, the German Agency for International Cooperation and the International Paralympic Committee are also heavily involved in the 10-day camp in Doha.
