Manchester United staff to receive record bonus pay out

Tue 20th Sep 2011 | Money & Finance

Staff at Old Trafford are expected to receive a record bonus payout. Manchester United will pay out a record £5million in bonuses to more than 500 Old Trafford staff.

According to the Daily Mail, the Glazer’s wrote to employees last Monday to tell them they are all in line for a 7.9 per cent bonus on their annual salary in recognition of the club’s success.

Some members of staff, such as £2million-a-year chief executive David Gill, will net just under £160,000 from the scheme.

The Glazers were determined to reward staff across the board after another hugely successful season at Old Trafford. United won a record 19th top-flight title and reached their third Champions League final in four years.

Performance off the field has also been reflected in the Glazers decision to give staff record bonuses.

They have been on performance-related pay since the Glazers took over in 2003, but the bonuses announced to staff are a record.

The club employ 620 people at Old Trafford, Carrington and at their commercial offices in London. Around 520 are non-playing staff and they have all been told the extra money will appear in next month’s salary.

United announced record revenue of £331.4m (up £45.0m over previous year) and record operating profit in excess of £110m for the twelve months ending June 30th 2011.

They are also making inroads into their substantial debt at Old Trafford, income is at record levels and they are planning a $1billion flotation on the Singapore stock market. United will publish the next set of accounts in October and they are expected to show massive increases in salary levels.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have also announced the further extension of its global commercial portfolio by sealing a three-year deal with Mister Potato.

The agreement sees the Malaysian brand, a product of the Mamee-Double Decker company, become the official savoury snack partner of the Barclays Premier League champion. The deal will target United’s five million strong fanbase in Malaysia and will see Mister Potato packaging carry the image of United stars, while also offering more traditional benefits such as advertising presence at Old Trafford.

Datuk Pang Tee Chew, CEO of Mamee-Double Decker, said:  “As a global snack partner of Manchester United, we are able to provide the opportunity for Malaysian fans to have the ‘Ultimate Man Utd Experience’, by giving them the opportunity to watch matches live at Old Trafford, a chance to win official signed merchandise and potentially meet their favourite players or legends.

“We will also be able to bring Manchester United legends to Malaysia to meet fans who are not able to travel to the UK. Football is a healthy sporting game for youth and for families, and we are proud to be able to provide this experience for the fans in Malaysia. Our initial sponsorship with Manchester United is three years but we also have the intention to extend the deal after this period.”

The club’s commercial director, Richard Arnold, added: “This deal is an excellent example of the global appeal of Manchester United and its ability to attract well-established but ambitious companies into partnership. Mister Potato has been the leading snack brand in Malaysia for many years now and their desire to expand that presence to other parts of SE Asia and beyond makes a deal with United a perfect fit.”
