Hearts sponsor withdraws support over Thomson affair
Tue 28th Jun 2011 | Football Sponsorship
The controversial decision by Heart of Midlothian to retain the services of Craig Thomson, has forced one of its sponsors to withdraw its support and forced Hearts to suspend Thompson.
Thomson, the 20-year-old full-back who was convicted this month of "lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour” had been allowed to resume his career with Hearts after he pleaded guilty, was fined and placed on the sex offenders register in relation to his inappropriate conduct towards two under-age girls over the internet.
The decision outraged many in football and MacB Water announced that it has withdrawn its support as official water sponsor of Hearts, a deal worth more than £5,000.
A MacB spokeswoman told the Independent newspaper: "As a company with strong family values, we are left with no choice but to terminate our relationship with the Hearts Football Club.
"Along with countless others, fans and co-sponsors alike, we are extremely disappointed with the club's handling of this situation and as a result can no longer continue our support."
However, fearing further loss of sponsorship over the case the club released a short statement on their official website, this morning: "Hearts today announce that Craig Thomson is suspended with immediate effect. No further comment will be made by the club."
