Football Conference chairman to stand down

Thu 16th Jun 2011 | Football Governance

Brian Lee has announced that he is standing down as chairman of the Football Conference.

Lee has been chairman of Conference for five years but announced at last Saturday’s AGM that he will step down from the position in twelve months.

Crawley Town manager Steve Evans, who was named Football Conference Manager of the year, said: “Brian Lee has done a magnificent job and has made the Football Conference the wonderful competition it is today.

“You only have to look at the clubs in the competition and the standards they have to operate to. Brian has put a Board of Directors in place who are all accountable for their various functions and this ensures that clubs, in the main, totally fulfill the criteria for membership to the Football League.

“Don’t get me wrong - Brian Lee can be tough but he is a very fair man. He is approachable and you can talk to him. Here is a man who has been a manager and a chairman of a club so we are very fortunate that he can understand the job that those working at club level have to do whether that is during the good or not so good times at any club.

“It touched me on Saturday when I heard Brian describe his proudest moment as chairman as being at Old Trafford when Crawley took the game to Manchester United by playing some outstanding football. He commented it was the way football should be played and on such a fitting stage. For a man with Brian’s football knowledge to say it was a brilliant performance, considering the quality of opposition, then you have to take notice.

“He may be stepping down in twelve months but that will not stop him working non-stop for a competition he has helped shape into what it is today. He will be very difficult to replace.”
