SFA & IFA set for UEFA cash windfall

Thu 24th Mar 2011 | Television & Broadcasting

The Scottish and Irish Football Associations are set for a cash windfall after they agreed to back UEFA’s mandate for the centralisation of commercial rights.

It is now expected the two associations will be guaranteed a minimum of around £15m per year from the agreement, which would outstrip their current television deals.

UEFA has been negotiating with their 53 member associations to centralise the sale of commercial rights to Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 qualifiers which will take effect from 2014.

Details of the centralisation scheme were discussed at the UEFA Congress in Paris this week and the next step will be for UEFA to take the centralised rights to the commercial market.

Speaking of the new deal Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan said: "It is great news in the current financial climate and, while a lot of work has gone into the negotiations, there is still a lot still to be done.

"What we have agreed is a mandate and despite the big, round headline figures in the media this morning, we are not in a position to discuss the terms of the mandate.

"Suffice to say, if the deal is activated in 2014 as expected it will give us flexibility to continue to provide services to all our stakeholders."

The English FA were reluctant to back the mandate arguing they would lose out, but after assurances from UEFA  they have also backed the plans which will see them a minimum of around £25m per year.
