Darren Bent quits Twitter to focus on Sunderland’s Premiership campaign

Thu 18th Feb 2010 | IT & Technology

Football’s most famous ‘tweeter’ has gone silent. Darren Bent, Sunderland’s £10m striker has apparently stopped using the social networking site as he concentrates on keeping Sunderland in the Premier League.

Darren Bent used his Twitter page under the name DBTheTruth to give fans the inside track on life in the Premiership, but now wants to concentrate on keeping SAFC in the top league.

Bent famously revealed his irritation about his £10m move from Spurs to Sunderland last summer on his Twitter page and that his mother had been the victim of racial abuse by a fan before a Wigan game in November.

But now the striker is hanging up his mouse to help turn around Sunderland’s three-month winless run of games.

He said: “I had a good chat with the manager recently and I just thought that, with the run we’re on at the moment, I needed to get rid of the distractions.

“I have to solely focus on getting Sunderland out of the relegation battle and I have shut the Twitter down.

“I don’t even go on it any more to look at what other people are posting. My friends are still on there and they keep me up to date.

“I felt that, for me, it’s run its course and I should get out of it.”

However, many of the player’s followers would disagree many of whom have left messages on the Twiiter site. The news comes after Manchester United told its players not use the social networking site as clubs have become increasingly worried by the use of these sites by their players.

In a special article in the next issue of F.C. Business due out next week, we look at why clubs should embrace social networking to engage with fans on a personal level.
