Portsmouth ask for permission to sell players outside of transfer window.

Thu 18th Feb 2010 | Football Governance

Breaking News

Portsmouth Football Club have reportedly asked the Premier League for permission to sell players outside of the transfer window. The club, who submitted a statement of affairs to the High Court yesterday face being wound up over an unpaid tax bill estimated at over £11m.

It is thought that this action could mean one of two things.

Firstly, that it is a positive and moral move by the club to try and show HMRC that they are taking all possible steps to reduce the £60million debt. Alternatively it could mean that if new money isnt brought into the club with immeadiate effect then the March 1st Court date could be the last one the club attends?

Where they would sell their players to would also be a big issue. They will need to look overseas and be expecting to receive no where near the asking price/vaulations of their players.   This will only add to the woe and worry of the Pompey faithful.

The chances of the Premier League allowing them to do it is not high. Sadly Portsmouth are not the only club in financial trouble and this could lead to essentially all clubs asking for the same kind of treatment which would see the end of the transfer window.

More news on this when we get it.
