Howard Webb joins technology debate at Soccerex European Forum
Tue 11th Jan 2011 | Football Industry Events
Soccerex are pleased to announce that Howard Webb MBE, England’s premier referee, will be taking part in a special panel on the use of technology in football at the Soccerex European Forum, 30-31 March 2011, Manchester.
The panel, titled “Crossing the Line: Football’s Technology Debate” will include a mix of stakeholders from technology companies and governing bodies as well as Mr Webb, the referee of last weekend’s FA Cup clash between Manchester United and Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool. The panel will look at what technology could do for football and whether it would benefit or damage the beautiful game.
Webb refereed the Final of the 2010 FIFATM World Cup, a tournament which saw several controversial goal decisions, such as Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal versus Germany and Carlos Tevez’s offside goal against Mexico. Decisions such as these increased the pressure for further debate on the use of technology in football.
The panel will be especially topical as the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body which controls any changes in the law of the game, will be holding their annual general meeting just weeks before the Soccerex European Forum, where they have agreed to re-examine the use of goal-line technology in the sport.
The Soccerex European Forum is a two-day event which is returning to Manchester for a second year at the Manchester Central and will see the elite of Europe’s football industry come together to debate, network and do business.
The agenda announced so far includes topics such as the German football model, financial equality, commercial challenges to differing sized clubs, successful sponsorship, digital media and fan interaction and Eastern Europe’s upcoming tournaments and market development.
