Beckenbauer criticises World Cup bid process

Wed 15th Dec 2010 | FIFA

Franz Beckenbauer, a leading member of the FIFA executive committee, has criticised the publication of voting details in the recent tender for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup host countries.

Beckenbauer, who was one of the 22 members of the FIFA executive committee eligible to vote, said that the ballots details should have remained secret so that nobody, not even he, should have known how many votes had been cast for each bid in each round.

"The Executive Committee was told that neither we nor the public would get to know the precise voting figures,'' Beckenbauer told Germany's Bild newspaper. After each round of voting, we were only told which candidate had been knocked out. And then a few hours later, I hear on the radio who had received how many votes.

Beckenbauer added: I am disappointed with the way FIFA have dealt with the results after the vote. The seven losers were all left in disgrace, especially England and Australia. England picked up only two votes and Australia attracted a single backer as both countries exited the bid race for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tender at the first round stage, with Russia and Qatar emerging as the hosts for the respective events.
