Blackburn FC's new owners may sell naming rights to Ewood Park
Fri 29th Oct 2010 | Football Sponsorship
Blackburn Football Club’s prospective new owners Venky’s, who expect to complete a £40 million buy-out of the club within the next two weeks have reportedly admitted that they may seek a sponsor for Ewood Park.
The group are understood to be looking at the possibility of sell the naming rights to the 120 year old ground.
Venky’s chairperson Anuradha Desai told the Daily Telegraph: “There are a lot of marketing plans. Nothing is certain yet, but one of the things we are considering is sponsorship of Ewood Park, although no decision has been made.
“We will do the best by the fans and also by the club and it is very important to continue the traditions of the club.
“We are going to be good responsible owners and we want to make the club stronger.” Mrs Desai’s brothers, Balaji and Venkatesh Rao, are due to attend Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea at Ewood Park.
And Mrs Desai admits that Venky’s are determined to capitalise on the growing interest in the Premier League on the subcontinent by acquiring Blackburn.
She said: “There is a generation of boys aged between 10 and 17 in India that are football mad, but lots of them support Chelsea.
“I believe we can make the market for football in India grow and having Indian owners in the Premier League will create a lot of interest here.
“I think we can try to create a whole nation of Blackburn Rovers fans. The takeover has made the front pages of all of the newspapers in India. That shows the interest that is there.
“My dream is to make Blackburn Rovers an even bigger brand in India than Venky’s.”
