Thu 12th Aug 2010 | Football Industry Events
It was reported this morning that Manchester United signing, Bebe, played at a Homeless World Cup.
Beating homelessness through football, the Homeless World Cup, is an annual world class, international football tournament working with 64 national grass roots football projects to reach 30,000 homeless players: over 70% change for the better.
The 8th Rio 2010 Homeless World Cup takes place from 19 – 26 September 2010 on Copacabana Beach, Rio, Brazil. It is supported by Nike, United Nations, UEFA, global ambassador Eric Cantona and international footballers Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba.
Bebe played for Cais, our partner organisation responsible for Portugal’s National Homeless Team. Bebe was not selected to play for a Homeless World Cup.
Gonçalo Sequeira dos Santos of CAIS and the Manager of Portugal’s National Homeless World Cup Team spoke to Bebe this morning to congratulate him on his news.
Bebe said: “I am very happy. Football can change lives, very much.”
Gonçalo Sequeira dos Santos, said: “Bebe is responsible, with one big heart and an all round awesome boy. We are truly happy for this opportunity he has to make his dream come true and improving his life. He had the dream of playing, one day, for a major club. That dream has come true.”
Bebe was living in Casa Do Gaiato, a well-organized shelter for young people on the outskirts of Lisbon when he was invited with 3 other boys from the shelter to play football with CAIS.
In 2009 Bebe was signed for Estrela da Amadora Football Club, a small club from the outskirts of Lisbon. Bebe made the 2009/2010 season playing for Estrela da Amadora Football Club. In June 2010 he sign for Guimarães Football Club and now Manchester United.
