Posh Appeal to Fans ‘Going the Extra Mile’ This Christmas

Fri 23rd Dec 2011 | Football Sponsorship

Green Energy Parks (GEP) are urging Peterborough United fans to take their shirts on holiday this Christmas, promising to convert the miles travelled by supporters into cash for local charities.

The ‘Going the Extra mile’ competition was launched by the Posh and GEP back in October and has already seen home and away kits popping up in Detroit and Cape Verde.

Supporters are being asked to take pictures of themselves in their football shirts as they celebrate the festive season around the world.  The person who travels the furthest will then have their miles directly turned into cash and split between the East Anglia Children’s Hospice, the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Peterborough United Foundation.  There are also exclusive match tickets up for grabs for the winner.

The East Anglia Children’s Hospice provides support for families, and care for children and young people in East Anglia.  They are a registered charity and rely on fundraising and donations to sustain their operations.  To keep their service up they need to raise around £4 million per annum.

The East Anglian Air Ambulance is 365 day a year service which is independent of government and National Lottery funding.  To keep the two air ambulances running they require over £4 million to be raised per annum.

The Peterborough United Foundation works with schools, local charities, the police and youth groups to encourage young people to play an active and responsible role in their community.  It uses sport to bring positive experiences to local youths from encouraging teamwork, to using goal difference as a way to improve maths skills.  It has been tremendously successful and levels of anti-social behaviour in the local community have dropped dramatically.  However funds remain stretched and they have recently been forced to cancel training courses.

Whilst Green Energy Parks are backing the competition, they are also appealing to other Peterborough businesses to get involved so that they can give more.

Chris Williams, Managing Director of Green Energy Parks, commented:

“Christmas is a time to remember how lucky we are and be grateful for what we have, though when times get rough we all need a little support.

"The Peterborough United Foundation, the East Anglia Children’s hospice and the East Anglian Ambulance all provide vital services to this community.

"I urge all business in this community to dig deep and join us to make sure we can give them all the help they need this Christmas.”
