Gary Neville supports a greener grassroots game

Manchester United and England legend, Gary Neville, has today backed a Football Foundation initiative that encourages potential grant applicants to consider the environmental impact of their proposed projects.

Neville, who made 400 appearances for the Red Devils and achieved 85 caps for England, used his Testimonial match against Juventus at Old Trafford earlier this year to encourage supporters to consider environmental issues.

Speaking about the Football Foundation’s ‘Green Guidance’ document, Neville said: “This guide provides Football Foundation applicants with an informative and user-friendly understanding of the key environmental factors that should be considered before undertaking a project.

“Football is the national sport and is watched and played by millions of people every week. It can therefore serve as a powerful medium to getting the message out there.

“The more Football Foundation sites that incorporate sustainable and green features, the lower the carbon footprint will be for the grassroots game. It will also help educate players about the efficiency and benefits of becoming green.”

The document is a comprehensive and easy to follow guide to inform applicants about the important yet sometimes confusing sector of environmentally-sound facilities.

Some of the areas where the Foundation is encouraging best practice include:

•  Use of renewable, sustainable, and recycled materials.
•  Transport policies and access to facilities.
•  Use of local labour and materials.
•  Reduction in carbon emissions.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “The Football Foundation has always been committed to making our projects as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible. This guide gives potential applicants the technical guidance notes required to pursue green avenues.
